Canna ‘Dolly Gay’ is a medium sized Premier Group cultivar; dark green foliage, oval shaped, branching habit; triangular stems, coloured green; panicles of flowers are open, cardinal-red with a narrow cream margin, throat cream with cardinal-red spots, staminodes are medium size, edges irregular, petals red, fully self-cleaning, blooms open in the early morning; fertile both ways, not self-pollinating or true to type, capsules globose; rhizomes are thick, up to 3 cm in diameter, coloured white and pink; tillering is slow.

Flowers are a solid tomato-red and shaped like a small cymbidium orchid. In the throat the colour breaks up into red blotches over cream and eventually becomes pure cream. Petals have a fine cream margin. Similar to ‘Cheerfulness’ but darker.
