Summary: One of the Island Series of Canna, ‘Gran Canaria’ is considered to be one of the ‘nearly-whites’ and because of its rarity is considered to be quite a find. Forms small compact clumps of bright green foliage crowned with its iris-like delicate blooms.
Size: Small and compact clumps.
Flower: Medium-sized, iris-like, freely produced delicate pale yellow blooms, fading to near white. Just qualifies as a Canna ‘White’.
Foliage: Green
Origin: Raised by Takii and Co. Japan, one of the Island Series which also includes ‘Corsica’, ‘Kreta’, Madeira’.
The Island Series was originally propagated by meristem culture and distributed each spring as young plugs for onward growing by nurserymen; because of this they were very healthy and free from virus. The series are early flowering and flowered about 10 weeks after potting.
The Takii corporation have removed the series from widespread commercial production because of problems with tissue culture.
